Done with part one of Pervert’s Guide to Cinema. For me the irritating part was constant reference Freud’s idea of Id, Ego and Superego that I found unnecessary. First because psychotherapy has come a long way. Second, this was unnecessary. Even if you remove all these references, the points he was making makes perfect sense. The sense I get from his style of talking about Freudien ideas is that as if they are facts not some framework to describe reality that is not real but imagined with sole purpose of making the job easier. What I have in mind is the way we use Cartesian coordinate systems we to describe the location of an object in space. We don’t see Cartesian coordinate system as a basic fundamental truth and part of the very reality it describe. Second example can be that of a map. Maps are the abstraction of landscape. They are not the constituent of landscape or a fundamental part of it. I am all in for using Freudien ideas as an abstraction like maps to explain anything under the sun. What irritated me is that they are presented as if they are as real as the sun. At least this is the sense I get from this documentary. Anyone who has read even basic psychology knows that they are not.
