Poverty and Self-Esteem

We, in Pakistan, as a society, where a huge majority is extremely poor, needs to learn empathizing with the poor. Poverty doesn’t just impact a person financially but also emotionally and no amount of prayers and positive thinking can counter that. Poverty causes extreme depression, anxiety and mood swings. Constant fear of hunger breaks thickest of the skin when it not just you but your whole family’s wellbeing is at stake.

We all can refrain from passing judgement on others, specially in social settings, like weddings, classrooms and birthday parties. It is often not that the other person doesn’t have a dressing sense, it is often that they can’t afford any better. It is not that they are negative or that they don’t have a spine, it is often that they are going through a lot. We all have the power of not hurting people with our words.

Note to self-righteous bigots

If you are one of those bigots who have never experienced extreme poverty but like to include yourself in the list by using clichés like ‘majority of us’ so that you can lecture people who have suffered on how they should think, what they should say and how they should behave. Be advised that I write these posts because of your this very attitude. I want to stop you from being a bigot and silencing people that are suffering in the name of religion and with your bullshit comparisons. ‘We also suffer the same.’ No you didn’t.
