Humzah: Because random person don’t call you a terrorist and woman beater because of your faith and other person join them saying it’s Australian government fault that they let you in, at a coffee shop when you asked them politely why they are starring at you with a funny look on their face. You ask them this because you think they want to know about your dragon boat club (you are in uniform buying coffee after morning training).

Nothing personal. I am just sharing the experience from the other side of the fence.

Catherine: Humzah… that totally sucks. At times I wonder what kind of person chooses to be so ignorant & abusively rude with it. I’m sorry that you are subjected to their pathetic existence.

Humzah: Catherine discrimination against minorities including racism is a global issue and unfortunately is widespread. I have experienced racism at the hands of Arabs including my cousins (I am mixed race), Pakistanis (my family migrated from India to Pakistan when British divided the country), Indian, British, Australians, even Africans in Pakistan, U.AE. and here in Australia. It’s not just “White people” thing or limited to “their countries”. If you talk to a Pakistani who is a Punjabi (ethnic majority), he will tell you that there is no racism or very little racism in Pakistan, the same way a white Australian would say that it is not that common here simply because they don’t experience it. I play my part in developing awareness by sharing my experiences. Hopefully, when we all have more awareness, the world will become more inclusive for future generations.

Catherine: I witness it with close friends of mine. I avoid conflict, except when this sort of crap occurs. I have stepped into heated verbal abuse directed at my friends and at strangers without fear. It’s a small thing but it’s something I can actually do in the moment.

Humzah: Catherine this makes a huge difference. It restores our faith in humanity. It also shows the people at the receiving end how to respond to racists, homophobes and other extreme groups. We can all be that person that intervene and says it is enough.

Humzah: Catherine can I publish our exchange on my blog as part of my conversation in comment series. Here is a blog for your reference.
